You’ve got a Facebook Page for your business. You’ve just started an Instagram account. You’ve got a few followers but nothing really note worthy.
One of the questions I get asked over and over again is, Kate, why isn’t my social media working for me? I’m just not getting anything from it.
My answer? Let’s look at your strategy. Awkward silence. Um, what? You don’t have a strategy? You and I really need to talk!
So why do you need a Social Media Strategy?
A Social Media Strategy establishes consistency across your social media channels. When you have a strategy, you know what you’re trying to achieve with each post and it’s much easier to know what kind of content you should be posting – because you’ve got a set of rules and a strategy to guide you.
Having a strategy means that you can plan, plan, plan. And if you talk to any social media manager worth their salt, they’ll tell you that is the key to good social media. You plan everything else in your business (right), so why wouldn’t you plan your social media? Especially given that there’s some stiff competition out there. Planning gives you a competitive edge and ensures you’re putting your best foot forward.
Following a Social Media Strategy means that you will be making the most of your time. Social Media can be a time suck – but if you have a strategy, you’ll be able to make the most of the time you have available. Creating content and scheduling it out will be much more time effective when you can do it in batches and create a story around your strategy.
Return on Investment
Social Media Strategy gives you a way to measure your return on investment. Your strategy is the way you get from your current position to meet those goals you’ve set. Having a strategy gives you the best chance to get from A to B. If you’re not setting goals for your social media and then measuring them, tell me, why are you putting in all of that time and effort? There has to be results – otherwise you’re wasting your time!
Makes Outsourcing Easier
While I believe YOU are the best person to manage the Social Media for your business, I also understand that for lots of reasons, you may need to outsource it. Having a strategy that you’ve created and put in place will make outsourcing your Social Media much easier. Why? Because your Social Media Manager will know exactly what they need to achieve with your social media channels. It gives them a very important tool to create social media magic with. Seriously, if you don’t have a strategy, what is your Social Media Manager actually doing?
Your Social Media Strategy should be a part of your overall marketing plan.
Neither can work on their own. Remember that social media is basically rented space, so while you want a strong social media strategy in place, you also need to make sure you have other marketing strategies working for your business. Seriously, what if your FB account was deleted? Better get that email list happening, right?
